With so many different types of period antique bookshelves available on the marketplace, how do you know what one is the right piece for you?
First you have to ask yourself what is a true antique period bookshelf? To be classed as a true antique it is anything that is over 100 years old. Some of the finest examples are those that are 150 years of age from the Victorian period or earlier from Georgian eras. They usually have more distinguishing features and fine artistry in the cabinet making and a wonderful aged finish.
All furniture from around the mid Victorian period or earlier was done so by hand, anything after this time may have been done by machinery, So usually the earlier examples are more unique with hand crafted dovetail joints, old clout nails and the finest quality timbers used.
Very old pieces of antique furniture were finished using a French polish or wax. The finish will have aged to a lovely patina giving that unique feel and smooth finish. Woods used can be of oak in early and later examples, following this to mahogany and walnut in Victorian pieces. They are very often solid, not veneered and so built to last.
