Balloon back chairs were made mainly in the 19th century with lots of Victorian chair makers copying the design but adding their own individual decorations such as floral carvings or different styles of legs. Some would be simple turned legs whilst others would have French influences such as the elaborate cabriole leg. The earlier balloon back chair was built by hand and so are better quality usually with more solid quality timbers used like Mahogany or Rosewood. This set was from the early Victorian period ca. 1850 they are a beautiful set of Six Victorian Antique Chairs with curved balloon backs and elegant carved central back supports. The chairs stand on splayed back legs and have beautifully turned front legs with fine decorative carvings.
Dating from ca. 1835 this Stunning Quality set of 6 William IV Mahogany Antique Balloon Back Chairs with tulip design carvings.
These 19th Century Balloon Back Chairs were recently re-upholstered in a period style fabric which is in very good condition although could easily be replaced if so desired since the seat pads are of the ‘drop in’ design.
These Cabriole leg Balloon Back Chairs are upholstered in a jacquard fabric with braid trim.They are constructed in a fine Walnut and are stamped ‘J.R.SPATENT’.
This is a set of 8 Antique Victorian Balloon Back Mahogany Dining Chairs. The back is almost in a shield design with a curved back.
This is a set of Four Victorian Rosewood set with carved ornate balloon backs, covered in a tapestry effect fabric with braid trim. These robust, but elegant, antique dining chairs would prove to be an attractive accompaniment to any small antique dining table or as additions to compliment another set.

I have 4 balloon back style with cabriole legs with a stamp on J R Gilly’s PATENT. can you suggest what they might be? Or tell me about the stamp?
