The Antique Canterbury was first introduced in the late 18th Century Georgian period ca. 1780 and got its name from the first commissioned piece by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Canterbury was popular throughout the 19th Century Victorian and later Edwardian periods in Britain as an occasional piece of furniture that could be dotted around the living room. The antique Canterbury is a small and very decorative stand having divisions, originally used for sheet music. They will often have turned finials above a delightfully figured frame having fine inlay decoration. They will have divided compartments, perfect for magazines, books and newspapers, with turned upright supports. The best examples will have quality blind fretwork carved decorative surrounds. The base will contain a slim drawer with a with small turned handles, it could prove to be the ideal storage solution for all those remote controls! The whole piece will stand on finely turned bun feet with brass castors along with white porcelain wheels, so they can be easily moved around the room. These fine pieces of antique furniture can make a lovely addition to the home as they are small and decorative but also very useful.
