Art Deco Furniture is dating from the 1920s to the 1930s usually built in finely figured Walnut, Oak and other exotic woods like zebra-wood. The Art Deco design was first seen in Paris, France in a decorative arts exhibition of 1925. The idea was to use the style of visual arts, architecture, design and this lead to influences in furniture designs with bold new ideas. This popular design soon become the vogue all over the world, with Britain at the forefront of design in furniture. Early Art Deco Furniture was very well made and expensive to buy with the later being more heavily produced and manufactured. New materials were introduced like chrome or Bakelite handles and the wood would be heavily french polished on the more figured veneers. Lighter shades of timbers were in vogue with natural figured wood grains emphasised by a high sheen and curved fronts, making these pieces not only more fine looking but very stylish. Inlay from mother of pearl, Ivory, Rosewood or even Brass was used in their decoration showing fine simple detailing from straight lines to diamond shaped key escutcheons. The Art Deco period was about luxury, style and being modern, this is why furniture from this period can fit so well into modern interiors.
