The History and Styles of the Antique Drop Leaf Table

Antique Drop Leaf Tables are very similar to the gateleg in design with two leaves, hinged on the side and extend to a larger dining table when opened. The only difference is the drop leaf is supported by swinging brackets rather than the leg. Antique drop leaf tables appeared in the early 17th century in the gate-leg form. The side brackets were introduced in the early 19th Century as they made the table more comfortable to sit at. They are the ideal size to sit against a wall as a console table when not in use but could comfortably seat four to six people when fully open. This is perfect for rooms that are spatially challenged. Victorian cabinet makers favoured woods such as Mahogany and Oak with simple inlay decoration around the edges like cross-banding. The best examples will have working drawers on either side with their original brass handles, designed to store cutlery. Antique tables of this style are popular today being perfect for a small modern flat.
