The Antique Workbox or also known as a sewing box was an essential piece of antique furniture for the Victorian Lady, where she would keep her sewing and embroidery tools, fabric, needles and materials. They often had a fabric lined drawer below a drawer with lots of dividers and stand on a pedestal or shaped side supports. They were finished on all sides so could be placed in the centre of a room and look desirable from all angles. Mainly the work box was in figured Mahogany or more pretty timbers like burr Walnut or Rosewood and often inlaid with elegant designs such as stately homes using very skilful Tunbridge ware inlay. Antique Workboxes are beautiful freestanding pieces of furniture and actually very useful for storage as they can be used as a side or lamp table.
