Antique Sutherland Tables

Antique Sutherland Tables

Antique Sutherland Tables are a 19th Century Victorian invention of a much smaller gateleg table design with a particularly narrow centre. Antique Sutherland tables are the ideal serving table as they are of lovely larger proportions when extended but fold away neatly when not in use. The drop flaps are usually long, almost to the floor. They are supported on a gate leg action and have beautifully turned upright supports with a turned cross stretcher, four elegant scrolled splayed legs finished with porcelain castors. The earliest design was first seen in the 1850’s in Mahogany with oval leaves and standing on pedestals. The most sought after design is with spectacular serpentine shaped leaves that are beautifully figured in a mirrored Burr Walnut. These extremely versatile and dainty looking antique tables are surprisingly robust when extended as they were originally used to hold a full tea service which would include cups, saucers and tea pot. They were also quite often used for games playing and writing, for the Victorian Lady.  Have a look below at a few lovely examples available for sale or look at many other designs here on our tables category, as we update this daily with new stock.
