Antique Music Cabinet

The antique music cabinet was originally made to store sheet music when home entertainment involved playing music and using instruments such as the violin or piano. They are lovely pieces of antique furniture and can be the ideal practical storage for paperwork, papers or magazines. The antique music cabinet will be in the design of a chest of drawers but the drawer fronts will be hinged, so they pull out and fall forward, giving you easy access to your paperwork. The earlier 19th Century designs will have a glazed or mirrored door and the interior will have adjustable shelves with old velvet linings. They were mainly built in the Victorian and Edwardian periods in Mahogany and Walnut or in rare occasions in Rosewood. The best examples will have fine inlay including cross banded edges with a striking kingwood and boxwood string inlay. Some come in unusual shapes like a bow front and most stand on four tapering legs with spade feet. They are not only very pretty pieces of furniture but also very practical and this is why they are popular pieces to have in your home.  Here at Antiques world we do get very beautiful examples for sale and you can see a small selection below.

This late 19th century Quality near Pair of Art Nouveau Antique Side Cabinets / Music Cabinets date from ca.1890. Each has a shaped moulded top with splayed supports above five working drawers. Each drawer has cross-banded edges and copper Art Nouveau handles. The drawer fronts are hinged, so they pull out and fall forward, giving you easy access to your paperwork.

This antique Walnut Victorian Music Cabinet circa, 1880 has a cross banded edge, boxwood string inlay and a pierced brass gallery for that added finish.  The corners on this striking piece are canted with decorative inlaid banding and a central glazed door with brass handle.  Even the sides on this lovely piece are beautifully figured showing how much detail has gone into crafting such a wonderful piece.  The interior comprises of four fixed shelves and stands elegantly on shaped bracket feet.

This Maple & Co music cabinet is constructed from mahogany with beautiful satinwood cross banding with boxwood and ebony string inlay along with brass handles. You can see how the drawers fold forward on the hinged mechanism.

This Inlaid Rosewood sheet Music Cabinet has the original bevelled mirror and turned gallery sides. The top is beautifully figured with boxwood string inlay detailing and a moulded edge. The cabinet stands on four tapering legs with castors and has the most amazing decorative inlays, that could have only been achieved by a true Victorian master craftsman.
