Antique Corner Cupboards

Antique Corner Cupboards

Antique Corner Cupboards are one of those useful pieces of antique furniture that you can use to utilise those awkward corners in room, when you need additional storage. Antique corner cabinets are either wall hanging or floor standing and come in solid woods like Oak, Mahogany or more rare examples in Rosewood and Burr Walnut. Antique corner cupboards were first seen in the early Georgian period, in Oak with features like dental moulding, figured doors with cross-banding and raised fielded panels. The interiors always had shaped shelves, often with their original paint and stand on shaped bracket feet if floor standing. Towards the later 18th Century, new features were introduced like the bow front antique corner cabinet with unusual inlay detailing in a rich Mahogany, a truly impressive design. The scrolled swan neck pediment with decorative brass eagle centrepiece or finial and brass H hinges were fitted on the doors, along with Rocco key escutcheons. Glazed doors were fitted with splendid astragal glazing bars to display drinking vessels and fine china. In the Victorian and Edwardian periods, new decorative shapes were made like the unusual Serpentine glazed corner cabinet with Grecian moulded edge and unique pear drop carved frieze. The corners were often canted with blind fretwork carvings, they were made to impress!
